Follow a guide's boat along the volcanic south coast, past Montaña Amarilla and Montaña Roja, for 40 minutes or 1 hour. No licence, no experience, just the sea.

By the way · the ride itself
The morning starts slowly at the San Miguel marina, where you arrive 30 minutes before your slot to change, lock away your things and pull on a life jacket and goggles. A short lesson on safe riding follows. Then the engines start, the pontoon falls away, and the first squeeze of the throttle makes everyone grin at once.
Out of the harbor the guide's boat leads and the group follows in a line along the shore. The route passes Montaña Amarilla, the bay of Costa del Silencio, Las Galletas and Montaña Roja, and its exact shape depends on the sea that day and on whether you booked 40 minutes or 1 hour. Along the way the team takes photos and videos at the best spots.
There is no rush to be brave. You find your own feel for the throttle within the group, and after the first stretch the spray stops being a shock and starts being the fun part. When the marina comes back into view the hour seems to have flown, and the drinks at the base taste better than they should.
Why this ride
This safari leaves the San Miguel marina on the south coast and follows a guide in a boat past Montaña Amarilla, the bay of Costa del Silencio, Las Galletas and Montaña Roja. You choose 40 minutes or 1 hour, in a group of up to 8, after a short lesson on riding safely; no licence and no experience are needed.

By the way · why the south coast
Tenerife's south coast suits riding for a simple reason given by the island's tourism board: its mountains shield the south from the trade-wind clouds, which keeps summery weather all year, above all on the coast. It is also the drier side of the island, with longer daylight hours than the north.
The coast itself is a lesson in geology seen from the water. Montaña Amarilla, a Natural Monument of 27.8 ha in San Miguel de Abona, was born of a marine eruption and holds a moving sand dune. Further east, Montaña Roja rises to 171 m inside a Special Nature Reserve of 166 ha.
West of Montaña Amarilla lie the low cliffs and coves of Costa del Silencio and the fishing village of Las Galletas, home to the Marina del Sur. From a jet ski you see this shore the way a fisherman does, low and close, with the colors of the rock changing from cream to rust within a few minutes of riding.

The sea was rough on my day but I went anyway, and it became one of the funniest, wildest things I have ever done. The instructor was clearly enjoying it as much as we were.”

Great fun with a guide who was a real laugh. The waves were big that day, which just meant more jumps. A good thing to do in the middle of the day.”

Only my second time on a jet ski and I loved it. The tour was well organised, and when the waves knocked us off they explained clearly how to get back on safely.”

It was our first time driving, and our guide taught us so well that we finished wanting to go again. You can buy the videos and photos afterwards.”

Our guide was brilliant, funny and full of good tips, and he made it work despite strong wind and a choppy sea. Beginner or experienced, just go for it.”

A full hour of riding at full power after a short briefing. I found riding alone more fun than with a passenger, faster and easier to balance. Buying the photos at the end is a nice touch.”
By the way · what riders say
Read through recent reviews and the instructors come up again and again. Riders describe them as helpful, friendly and funny, and several name a favorite guide who made the hour. First-timers say they were taught well enough to finish the ride wanting to come back, and one rider who fell off in the waves writes that the guide explained clearly how to climb back on safely.
The sea is the second theme. Some riders went out on rough days and loved it, describing big waves as extra jumps rather than a problem; one calls it among the funniest things they have ever done. Others mention riding far out to sea and along the coast in both directions, and a full hour of power after a short briefing.
The third theme is the photos and videos sold at the end, which riders call a smart way to remember the rush and decently priced. A few practical notes appear too: one rider would have liked a warning to protect their eyes from salt water, and another praises the team for moving a booking when the weather turned. Riders give the ride 3,005 reviews averaging 4.54.

View tourBy the way · the season
There is no off season for this ride. AEMET's normals for the Tenerife Sur airport station, 64 m up on the south coast, give an average high of 21.7 °C in January and 28.4 °C in August. The lows run from 15.2 °C in January to 21.1 °C in August.
The sea moves within a narrow band too. The island's tourism board gives the water temperature around Tenerife as ranging from 19 to 26 degrees across the year. In summer you dry off in minutes; in winter the spray feels fresher, and the ride lends a wetsuit if you need one.
Rain is rare. Tenerife Sur averages 0 mm in June and July and 30 mm in December, its wettest month. Sunshine peaks at 295 hours in July and dips to 193 in January and November. Whatever the month, the deciding factor is the sea on the morning itself, not the season.

By the way · wind and waves
The Atlantic sets the mood of every ride. A flat morning feels like gliding; a breezy one throws spray and the occasional jump. The exact route of the safari depends on the weather on the day. That flexibility is part of riding the open sea.
Spanish rules allow personal watercraft only in good visibility and good weather. The harbour master can change riding times and zones, or ban riding for a while, when the weather or other safety reasons call for it. Riding is allowed only in daylight, from 1 hour after sunrise to 1 hour before sunset.
Plan for that. Put the ride in the first days of your holiday, check the sea the night before, and remember when the cancellation deadline falls. You can cancel without charge up to 24 hours before the start. If the sea is wild on your chosen day, moving to a calmer morning is the sensible move, and the coast will still be there.
Your hour at sea
40 minutes or 1 hour, no licence needed, and free to cancel until 24 hours before.
By the way · your options
The safari comes in a short and a long version, 40 minutes or 1 hour. Forty minutes is plenty for a first try: long enough to find your balance, feel the speed and see the landmarks nearest the marina. A full hour gives the guide room to range further along the coast and leaves more time at the stops.
Booking is flexible. Payment comes after you reserve, and cancelling is free until 24 hours before the start. The starting price is from $47, and the booking page shows the price for your option and date. Bear in mind the extras on the day: a deposit for each jet ski, paid in cash, and the photos, which are sold separately.
Its 3,005 reviews average 4.54; the guide alone scores 4.6, while transportation and value for money score 4.5 each. If you can only fit one water activity into your stay, the long record makes this a safe pick. If you have more time, our guides compare it with the other rides on the island.

By the way · photos
Phones are not allowed on this ride, and there is a good reason to welcome that rule: both hands belong on the handlebars. Lock your phone away at the base with your keys and wallet. The lockers are included, and so is a shower when you come back.
The team takes photos and videos at the best spots along the route, and you can buy them after the ride; they are not included in the price. Decide in advance whether you want them, and agree with your group who buys the set if you are sharing a slot. A shot of the spray against the volcanic shore makes a far better souvenir than a shaky phone clip.
If you want your own souvenir, take it on land before or after the ride. The coast around the marina has its own paths and beaches, and a photo of the shore from above, next to one of you on the water below, tells the whole story of the morning.
On the route
Montaña Roja, the red cone near the end of the coast, is a 171 m volcano.
It rose in a coastal eruption and stands inside a Special Nature Reserve of 166 ha in Granadilla de Abona, a landmark you can pick out from far along the shore.
By the way · what to wear
Arrive in swimwear with a light top over it, and keep everything else simple. The ride includes a life jacket and goggles, and a wetsuit is lent if you need one. Bare feet are fine on the deck; flip-flops and loose hats tend to end up in the sea at the first jump.
Bring a passport or ID card, of which a copy is accepted, and cash for the deposit. Drivers aged 16 or 17 need the written consent of a parent or legal guardian, so print it before you leave the hotel. Put on water-resistant sun cream well before the ride, so it does not run into your eyes.
After the ride you can rinse off: the shower and toilets are 100 m from the base. A towel, a dry change of clothes and a bag for the wet swimwear are all you need. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and juices are included, so have something to drink before you head back to the car.
The practical part
By the way · your guide
The instructors on this ride speak English and Spanish. The lesson before the ride covers how to ride safely, and Spanish rules require that briefing before anyone uses the machines, given by one of the instructors, on handling and the basic rules of navigation. Ask anything you did not catch before you leave the pontoon.
On the water the guide rides ahead in a boat and the group follows. The engines are loud, so ask at the briefing how the guide will signal you to slow down, stop and gather. Keep the distance the guide asks for; the deposit exists to make sure riders keep the safety rules, above all the spacing between jet skis.
Spanish rules back the guide up. On a group excursion, riders keep the spacing and formation the instructor sets and may not overtake each other. Everyone aboard, driver or passenger, wears an approved life jacket. Follow the guide, and the hour runs itself.
No. No previous experience and no driving licence are needed, only good physical condition.

From $47. Prices start there, and paying can wait until after you reserve.
The route or the date changes. The route depends on the weather, the harbour master can stop riding, and cancelling is free until 24 hours ahead.
By the way · the coast on foot
You do not need a jet ski to enjoy this coast. Montaña Amarilla, a Natural Monument shaped by a marine eruption, sits right by the coast at Costa del Silencio, and its pale layered rock looks even stranger close up than from the water. It covers 27.8 ha and holds a moving sand dune.
Further east, Montaña Roja stands inside a Special Nature Reserve of 166 ha in Granadilla de Abona. The volcano is 171 m high, the result of a coastal eruption, and its red slopes are easy to spot from any beach nearby.
If you are staying on the Adeje side, Puerto Colón and its neighbouring beach La Pinta, with calm water behind the breakwaters, make an easy afternoon. Up the west coast, the Los Gigantes cliffs rise up to 600 m straight from the sea, and the Archipengue viewpoint in Puerto de Santiago shows them from land.

By the way · is it for you
This safari suits anyone in good physical condition who wants an hour of speed and scenery without paperwork. No licence and no experience are needed. Couples can share a jet ski as driver and passenger, as long as the passenger is at least 8 and strong enough to hold on, and the total stays within 200 kg.
It does not suit everyone. The ride is not for children under 8, pregnant women, non-swimmers, people over 118 kg or people with back problems, and it is not recommended for anyone over 120 kg. The maximum age is 70, and alcohol and drugs are not allowed. Be honest about these limits when you book; they exist for your safety on open water.
The other caveats are practical. There is no pickup, so you make your own way to the San Miguel marina, and you pay a cash deposit and any photos on top of the price. If those points suit you, the ride is a fine way to see a jet ski in Tenerife at its best: a guide ahead, a volcanic shore beside you, and the open Atlantic under your feet.
